Back of the book :

Every Monday, 49-year-old Ellie looks after her grandson Josh. She loves him more than anyone else in the world. The only thing that can mar her happiness is her husband’s affair. But he swears it’s over now, and Ellie has decided to be thankful for what she’s got.

Then one day, while she’s looking after Josh, her husband gets a call from that woman. And just for a moment, Ellie takes her eyes off her grandson. What happens next will change her life forever.

Because Ellie is hiding something in her past.

And what looks like an accident could start to look like murder…

What I think :

Ellie is in prison. we don’t know why. She is married to Roger, who isn’t very nice to Ellie. He’s been having an affair, he’s had many affairs actually. He has only stayed with her because Ellie self-harms. He has promised Ellie and their marriage therapist that he is no longer seeing his other woman.

One day however, whilst she is looking after her four-year-old Grandson Josh, she overhears Roger talking to the woman he promised her he was no longer seeing. It turns out he lied, he is still seeing her. They end up having a huge row. Ellie only took her eyes off Josh for five minutes, but in that time something happens that will change their lives forever …

Jo is a older homeless person, who sold ‘The big issue’ on the streets to get some cash, but she had to move on suddenly so she can’t do that anymore. She’s begging to get by. Both Ellie and Jo have had really hard times and have a connection …

When I first started this novel I wasn’t quite sure about it as it covers plenty of serious subjects, such as homelessness, mental health and child abuse. However, after starting to read I realized that it wasn’t how I expected at all.

The story is told from Ellie and Jo’s perspectives, and tells of Ellie’s awful childhood after her mum dies and her dad gets a new wife. This book is quite difficult to read in places, but that said I couldn’t put it down. I especially wanted to find out what Ellie and Jo’s connection was. I wasn’t disappointed.

I have really enjoyed some of Jane’s other books, such as ‘My Husbands wife’and also ‘The Dead Ex’ and this book is up there with them. I wouldn’t have called it a thriller though, I would probably say if anyone asked me what genre his book was that it was about ‘real life’.

Another brilliant book from Jane Corry.
