Back of the book :
A SHOCKING DISCOVERY.
A COMMUNITY WRAPPED IN SECRETS.
A tiny island community is stunned by the discovery of a long-buried body.
For Stella Harvey the news is doubly shocking. The body has been found in the garden of her childhood home – the home her family fled without explanation twenty-five years ago.
Now, questioning her past and desperate to unearth the truth, Stella returns to the isolated island. But she quickly finds that the community she left isn’t as welcoming as she remembers – and that people in it will go to any length to protect their secrets.
One thing rings true…
You can’t bury the truth forever.
What I think :
Stella used to live on the beautiful, but isolated island of Evergreen. She loved everything about the island, but her sister Bonnie didn’t. They were only a children when her and her family left one stormy night. They were never told by their parents why they had to leave so quickly. But a while later the girls teenage brother Danny left home, never to return. Stella and Bonnie’s parents split up too.
Now twenty five years later, a body has been found close the garden of their old house. Stella is left with questions that she needs answering :
W¹ho is has been murdered and buried there ?
Was the body there when they lived in the house ?
Stella knows she needs to go back to Evergreen, but Bonnie warns her not to go back, she worried for Stella. But she goes anyway.
However when Stella gets to the island things don’t seem right, nothing is the same.
Stella has always wondered why her best friend Jill never wrote back to the many letters that Stella sent to her after she left. People don’t seem to want to welcome her. Nobody seems pleased to see her, even the locals that lived there when she was little.
Then Stella finds out the identity of the murdered girl, and she knows that she must leave the island …
Is stella safe … ?
Will she ever find out the secrets of evergreen … ?
This is the first of this authors books that I’ve read and I thought it was quite brilliant. I always think that a book with a map at the front has got to be good ! The story is told and the present (now) and the past (The summer of 1993 – the summer before Stella left the island) Starting off slowly, building up the suspense slowly, telling the islands hidden secrets. There are plenty of really well-formed characters that you can relate to.
It takes you on a bit of a ride with plenty of twists and turns and one hell of a brilliant ending.
I really liked this twisty thriller and give it 9/10 (5 Stars)
