I Found You – Lisa Jewell.

Lisa Jewell

Back of the book :

Two women, twenty years of secrets, and a man who can’t remember …

Surrey : Lilly monrose has only been married for three weeks. When her new husband fails to come home from work one night, she is left stranded in a new country where she knows no-one.

East Yorkshire : Alice Lake finds a man on the beach outside her house. He  has no name, no jacket, no idea what he is doing there. Against her better judgement she invites him into her home.

But who is he, and how can she trust a man who has lost his memory … ?

What I think :

Alice is a single parent, she has three children and three dogs ! She leads quite a chaotic life to say the least. They all live in tiny cottage by the sea. Luckily she has a best friend, Derry to keep her sane. Alice makes flowers and other items from old maps, this started off just as a hobby but she now sells them on the internet for silly money. It makes her enough money to pay her bills. She has a office at the top of the little house, its whilst she working there, one wet day, when she sees a man sitting on the beach, he’s sat there for hours and doesn’t seem to be moving. She’s quite worried about him, so when its time to get the kids from school she makes a detour to the beach. Its turns out that he hasn’t got a coat with him or a wallet, just a train ticket from the night before. He doesn’t know who he is, or why he’s actually there. He’s lost his memory. Against her better judgement Alice invites him to stay that night, that way she can keep an eye on him and help get his memory back.

Meanwhile in Surrey, Lily is getting more and more worried, her husband Carl, of 2 weeks hasn’t arrived home from work, she’s rang him many times but he’s not answering his phone. where can he be … ? She doesn’t know what to do, she hasn’t been in the country for long,  they married abroad, she hasn’t even met any of his family yet and has no phone numbers for them. In the end she calls the police, who aren’t really that interested, they think its just a domestic. That is, until they look into his disappearance and realise that  Carl doesn’t actually exist.

Can Lily’s husband been the man from the beach ? If he is, what secrets can he been hiding and what on earth caused him to lose his memory … ?

Its always a good day when Lisa Jewell publishes a book ! After a few scary moments when I actually thought that I wasn’t actually going to get a copy, Whsmith, came through for me and I’m really glad they did because this book is fabulous. Its full of excellent characters with just the right amount of humour and serious moments too. I could really identify with Alice and her ‘Mad house’ of children and dogs, she’s just a normal person trying to get on with life. I did however find it difficult to sympathise with lily because I mean, really, who marries someone they only met a few weeks ago and then move to a different country with them, its madness ! she hadn’t even met his mum or family.

Having said that though, I really loved this book, Lisa just gets better and better, I would definitely recommend this as a book to take to the beach with you. I was glued to it right from the first page to the last.

I give it 10/10 (5 stars )
